DeskWand Voice
Say it. It's done. Your words become text, or an answer spoken back to you.
Dictation: press once, talk, press again.
It works in whatever app you are already typing in.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+D. A strip appears beside the box you are typing in, and the microphone opens.
- Talk normally. The level moves with your voice, and the tag shows the language.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+D again. Your words are tidied into sentences and typed where the cursor is. With nowhere to type, they go to the clipboard.
Conversation: press Alt+V, then just talk.
No chat window. The same strip does the talking, and it will not touch your files.
- Press Alt+V, or click the button on the strip. It starts listening.
- Ask your question and pause. The pause sends it, and the answer is read back a sentence at a time.
- Cut in at any point and it stops reading to listen. Press Alt+V again to end.
What stays on your computer
With the microphone off nothing is captured, and no audio leaves your computer. Otherwise:
| By default | If you switch | |
|---|---|---|
| Speech to text | On your computer | A cloud service you pick |
| Spoken replies | On your computer | A cloud voice you pick |
| Tidy-up | On your computer | Cloud, off by default |
| Conversation | The model you connect, cloud or on your computer | — |
Models download on first use: 228 MB for speech to text, 182 MB for spoken replies, 378 MB for tidy-up. Downloads resume if they drop, and every file is checked.
Before you start
- Microphone permission, plus Accessibility so it can type into other apps.
- For conversations, sign in with a DeskWand account, or use your own key from a service such as OpenAI or DeepSeek. Dictation needs neither.
